It was a sweltering day in Hong Kong on June 1st 2018 but that didn’t stop Size Stream from talking about the impeding ice age as 250 leading apparel retailers, brands, and manufacturers, gathered to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing our industry at the Weave Conference.
A great lineup of speakers included Size Stream’s own (CEO) Joe Dixon, The topic; how 3D body scanning, combined with apparel personalization software, can offer retailers a brand new way to embrace today’s shoppers expectations on clothing style and fit. The message was simple: we have to understand the customer’s body shape and produce garments based on individual body dimensions instead of asking the customer to figure out what might fit through trial and error. The current paradigm of mass produced inventory, based on size, will lead to an extinction level event for traditional brick-and-mortar and eCommerce retailers.
This presentation was not just one of those “Wake up and smell the coffee” messages though. Instead, Joe artfully outlined a solution, “The antidote” to avoid being overtaken by the new wave of low cost online retailers (The ice).
